I've had a '01 KJ V6 since November of that year. (1st or 2nd delivery to Aus I believe). Had to get rid of a much modified ( and loved ) TJ Wrangler to allow for family. Personally I've always felt the petrol was underpowered..and certainly under-torqued for it's weight. Not happy with the clearance (or the visual) ..we went with 'tweaked' OME lift kit that gave us about 2 1/2" lift..and then added Cooper 245/75 x 16 tyres. Finances ran out on me though and I never got the 4.01 or better still.. 4.56 ratios done. This was a big mistake as it made the problem I had from standard..even worse ! I believed the petrol engine needed the 4.01 final drive much more than the diesel did..but thats how the first shipments were coming in. I'm not sure about now though. Average fuel consumption has been from about 13.5 through to 15.5 depending on load and how hard it's pushed. I believe ratios would have done a lot to reduce those figures though...and made the car much more pleasant to drive. ...Moral...?? If you're buying a petrol engine... get the ratios done.. and then worry about lift...tyres...bullbar etc. If you buy the CRD... I can't speak from experience...but it seems you've made the right choice !

Default 2005 KJ CRD 61,000 kms

I'm averaging 10.7 l/100 in normal driving - 50/50 mix of city/highway.
It's up a little from 10.5 l/100 when I replaced the clapped out Goodyear tires at 35000 km with Pirelli Scorpion ATs - worth it for the better ride, handling and wear both on and off road.
Gets down to around 8.5 on trips.

Last trip towing 16' pop top van down to Melb

18L/100 into headwind

14L/100 driving sedately around 95-100 Klm/hour (does go up hills nice must say) - that's about 5L/100 better than the wrangler driven at the same speed

My KJ was up to 18.5 lt/100 round town and I decided to have a closer look at what was happening...
First a top with injector cleaner and some 98 octane (very little improvement)
It has about 42K on the clock so I checked the plugs.... Nice colour but electrodes burnt right down and about 0.050" gap...

6 new Iridiums plugs ($15 each REPCO) and it going like a train will have some fuel figures tomorrow.
