HID for absolute distance at the moment can't be beaten whilst LED for wide area lighting is the best option.

I have been working in in the entertainment industry in the field of lighting since 1992, wow almost 20 years now, I'm getting old. In the music/concert/television area we had pioneered discharge lighting in focused beam applications. It's been in use since the early 80's. LED's are making big in roads into the lighting realm, but they still have a way to go.

No matter the type of lamp, (LED, HID, Halogen, Incandescent etc), the big thing is the reflector system incorporated into the fixture. This is what does the hard work. Throwing light out the front of a fixture isn't difficult, getting so called bang for the buck is.

At the moment the size of the lens system required for a good length of beam such as for driving lights is still too big for cars, unless you want something 12" in diameter and around 12"-14" in length. Time will come when it it miniaturized but it isn't there yet.
