Its not so much owning the car, its owning the car thr stereo came from. Once the radio is installed.for the first time they lock the VIN of that vehicle into memory. If removed and installed in another vehicle they lock until the security code is put in. The code is calculated by Chrysler from the stereo serial number, but they they want the VIN of the original vehical it was installed in as sort of proof you got it legitimately. But they do read it out from just the stereo serial.
