Default Radio Security Code lost

I bought my Jeep second hand and had some wiring work done on it today and there is no security code for the radio. What are my options since Jeep wouldn't give my mechanic the code but can I get it? Would they have to reprogram the radio for a new code?

Technically you need the VIN of rhe vehicle it came from, more for security than anything else. If you have a friendly Jeep person though they can get it from the stereo serial number itself.

The mechanic gave the vin but was told no and was not impressed by the attitude of the dealership.

Its not so much owning the car, its owning the car thr stereo came from. Once the radio is installed.for the first time they lock the VIN of that vehicle into memory. If removed and installed in another vehicle they lock until the security code is put in. The code is calculated by Chrysler from the stereo serial number, but they they want the VIN of the original vehical it was installed in as sort of proof you got it legitimately. But they do read it out from just the stereo serial.
