Default CJ7 Power Steering

HI Guys,
I am a new member to this forum and to the world of JEEPS, well kind of, I have been 4wheeling for years but have always had Zuk's and wanted to go up in the world so I finally bought a CJ7 Renegade, 1ST questions is though, Any Ideas for power steering??? Any surgestions of reasonably easy conversions would be much appreciated.. Its a 4lt 6cyl. Has manual steering obviously. Is there anything else I should upgrade at the same time? Steering shaft, or rods etc..

Thanks heaps Mark
Hopefully I can come out and play one day!!! (if she lets me!)

Hunt around and find a pump and box from a Cherokee. Will bolt straight in with a bit on fabrication for the PS pump bracket.
Don't forget to run a brace from the PS pump to the opposite chassis member to avoid chassis cracks/stress at the pump bolts...

Comes to mind that it's cheaper to find a FSJ setup than to raid a TJ Wrangler setup. Same and similar....

But then again...

You can also use a power steering box from the old holden HQ to WG, this is what I used, it bolts to the chassis and steering tie rods without modification but the steering column input shaft needed modifying. Certainly the old 80's SJ Cherokee Jeep steering box is easier to fit if you can find one, but I did my holden one for 200.00.
Another thing you might want to think about, older Jeeps use a steering box gear ratio of 3.5 turns lock to lock, newer Jeeps are about 2.5 same for the holden box I used, the older Jeeps have very light steering, takes a lot to get used to, I prefer the heavier feel.

Hi Glen,
Thanks for tip, I did hear there maybe a holden box but wasn't sure on the model. I expect to have more chance finding that than a jeep box.
Also have you had much problem with the square coupling at the botom of steering shaft, mine is loose, seems dangerously loose actually. Not had jeep long so trying to work out its quirks, I see your in Brissy, Is there any club meets or something, I would like to catch up with some blokes like yourself and see some of your rigs & ideas..
Cheers Mark

a FSJ box will bolt to your steering shaft with no mods a CJ power steer box will need a new shaft or at least the coupling

if your steering shaft is worn out then use what ever box you get your hands on and get a shaft to match but if your steering shaft is good then go a FSJ box a lot less head aches IMHO

What ever you do make sure you brace it or it wont stay on the mounts for long after a bit of heavy use

I have heard an XJ box works well to but have not researched that as I got a FSJ box for about $150
