The jk and patrol are totally different beasts as far as I am concerned...

It will come down very much to the driver and the loading conditions. The manual will typically suck less juice than the auto. For some reason despite having more useable gears the auto CRD wranglers are constantly slurring away on the torque converter way more frequently than the simplistic Nissan slushbox. I reckon this has something to do with why they overheat so easily.
Byt yes I had very very few issues dialling up the fuel use of mine to figures well in excess of the direct injection 3.0L TD Pootrols particularly on the beach but also in hilly areas. The worst part is due to the smaller fuel tank they'd always catch up while I was at the next servo topping up.

2012 crd unlimited with 2,5 inch lift, 265-70-17 Goodyear muds, rock sliders... just back from a Vic High Country trip.......... 1000klm of Highway & 450klm of mainly low range grinding up & down mountains. Averaged 11.5 l/100klm for the whole trip. ( had the soft top on which seems to adversly affect highway fuel consumption).
Usual easy country commuting varies from 9.5 to 11.5 l/100klm depending on headwinds !!

It's surprising the difference in Jeep's diesels.
I have a mate who owns a 04 Jeep Grand diesel and while it's as stock as can be, he loads it up quite a bit, he gets around 8/100 on trips, some times less. I think the Merc diesel version is amazing.
That's why I was tempted to get the new JK CRD but ended up with the 3.6 because it was more affordable for me

the difference in price of the diesel to the petrol will pay for A LOT of petrol.. AND 209kw's is a lot of fun.. I simply love the Pentastar.. everyone that drives in can't believe how strong the motor pulls.. hell, they're using it in the new 300C !!

warnabrother, that's good to hear. I'm in the market for a new JK after selling my TJ. Initially thought CRD sport but this past week seriously keen on the Rubi - have to wait for both which I'm okay with and not too different in price. Drove the 3.6 last week and quite impressed. Hadn't ever been in a JK before...what a different car they are to a TJ...chalk & cheese.
