Default Dupli Color Bed Armour on Flares - Need Help!

Hi everyone,

So a while ago I saw a vid on YouTube of a guy in the states that used this to bring life back to his flares - it came out AWESOMENESS!

So I think, hey I'll do the the same. So I go down to Supercheap and get myself a couple of cans. Now the first question comes up:

What to prime the flares with?
The bloke in the video (Ohio Redneck) used some Krylon Fusion Camo

The person at the store - after getting on the phone to someone (Dupli Color?)
Says it doesn't need anything - no primer, just a sand and that should do. They did not mention plastic though.

I've literally spent hours looking for answers on the interwebs and can only come up with the following:

I should sand, then use plastic adhesion promoter (sand again?) then use the Bed Armor?

I know they are only flares and I can buy new ones, but there are other things I'd like to buy first for the TJ. Also I hate doing hack jobs - especially on my TJ.

The only experience I've got with spraying stuff is with plastidiping the sails on the doors - came up very nice. But I want something tougher for the flares.

Sorry for the long post.......

Any help would be really appreciated.

The bed armour is designed for plastics so you would get away with just a clean then top coat.

Rust-oleum sell an automotive plastic primer that would be ideal if you think you need a primer.

You would be probably best off wiping down the flares with isopropyl alcohol, plastic primer then your top coat.

I did my flares as follows and they turned out well (my own opinion)

wax and grease remover, rough it up with sand paper, super etch primer, more sandpaper, blow it off with air, many light coats of bedliner.

They were alloy though, for plastic rough em up and shoot em with many light coats of bedliner. It sticks to anything, i have it on thongs, garage floor, work horses etc etc

Thanks loads for the replies everyone!

I was gonna use Krylon Fusion - you are right in saying it's hard to find, but I prefer the look of the bed armour. I've never read that bed armour was designed for plastic, that's interesting.

Anyway, if any one else has any experience, post it up!

Appreciate the help so far

I'd did my flares in this stuff and I'm not overly impressed with it. Wax and grease remover, sand, adhesion promoting primer, then many coats of bed armour.

Results to date. It fades pretty quick, 3-4 months and mine is fading. Mud doesn't wash off and stains it. Over weeks it eventually fades away. Anything stronger than a hose and you run the risk of it lifting off. If you brush up against anything it just comes off. My front flare now looks like a paper bark tree after a slight altercation with a tree off road. My rear flare has been ripped up after ever so slightly brushing a tree. Absolutely no marks in the plastic. When I get time I'm going to strip mine and just back to black them (or similar) every couple of months.

Hey everyone, after reading Rockets post I think I'm gonna go the Krylon Fusion route. I found a bloke in Hoppers Crossing, Vic not too far from me that says he may have some in stock.

There just seems like too much margin for error using the Bed Armour. Hopefully I get the stuff by the weekend and I can get it done.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Also, Rocket your TJ is sicker than Malaria!
