TJpete: i just wired up my remote the other day, i reused the switch from the warn remote and mounted is flush next to my gear stick, also installed a power cut of stwitch for the remote next to it. looking at upgradeing the motor (XD9000i) to a 24v to try and get some more speed out of it.
Coxy,

The motor you want is the new Bosch 6hp model from the WARN XP9500. This can run in 12 or 24 volt. If you go 24 you have the added complexity of an additional 24v alternator however "Ohm's Law" will be twice in your favour if you go 24 so if you can achieve this it is worth it for a winch car.

Good to see you can contol the winch from inside the cab. Great idea to incude the power cut-off to it also.

I have a warn lowmount (if that's the normal one) 8000lb, I think it is. Got it 2nd hand a while back. Had it on my troopy, which it worked ok for... until it filled up with water on a serious river crossing, then died in the ass winching me up a hill later that day. One or two of the gears inside disintigrated completely. The whole thing is now in a plastic bag, in bits.

Or would it be cheaper to just get myself a nice Brawn one? http://www.brawn4x4.com.au/XR-8000.htm
Brawn make great stuff but if you go the repair/mod route for winch mods/rebuilds go see :

Good thread Pete

Mal Leslie starred in a 4wd monthly story with a great full hi-mount comp prep feature which I used as the bible for my 8274 comp prep.

The short edition :
  • motor innards and outerards epoxy painted
brake shaft tapped and capped to avoid the 21 ball pickup
spun alloy motor cap (with two standard alternator bearings pressed in for armature to spin on in lieu of a brass bush) with air feed from OBA tank
spun alloy o-ringed drum cap to keep muck out
modded heatsink for motor (cool collar oil filter cooler from jcwhitney.com)
drum has ears welded on and 0.5" stainless bars to prevent cable wrap (WHY Warn don't include this standard on highmounts is beyond me! Even my xd9000 slow-mount had them...)
oil drain hole and fill hole in gearbox
gearbox breather line run to small filter
    brass brake shaft bush grub-screwed

Other guys in the XWC go apeshit and join drums, motors, run 12V motors at 24V, water/liq nitrogen motor cooling and other kooky stuff. I'm but a noob at this winch comp stuff and still run the venerable 2.5hp 12V motor but am happy with it for now.

Plenty of discussion of this sort (mainly comp-related) on ol4x4 too.

And Pete...Herr Nolte can't even remember what it's like to SIT in a Jeep let alone drive one He's a pommie oilleak lover these days[/list]
Gordo,

Sorry to hear old mate MN is not Jeeping the Brindabellas these days. I always found him to be a devoted Jeeper on the 3 or 4 rare occassions that I met him. He came around to the shed once with old Rocket Rod and we shared a Guiness or 19 and solved all of the prob's of the cosmos. Ah well, maybe we'll see him Jeepin' again soon.

Hey Pete, I beleive he can be found at Fraser with those evil Walker bros at the moment if you wish to attempt to brainwash him back to the side of goodness and light.

Just look for the 130 oilleak buried to the sills acting as an artifical reef
