Cutting tyres is really hard work... at least with a hand held grinder... and messy... and smokey!

Tommo you have a better chance of making a spacer to go between the body and the existing flare to pop it out a couple of inches. Made out of galvanized sheet the curve of the flare will keep it rigid.

Extreme: So there'll be a gap/channel of a couple of inches between the car and where the flare actually starts? Wouldn't that fill up with crud?

Tommo since when has crud on your car bothered you.
It wouldnt be any different thancleaning normal flares.

That's news to me. Half the mud on my Heep right now has a Victorian accent, and I've been in Sydney for 2 months.

I might just go garden edging... Back to Bummings I go; cheap and cheerful.
Dammit there aren't enough of them in Sydney - i reckon Syd has half the Bummings concentration of Melbourne.
