Default Cherokee KJ or Totota Prado?

Hi all, I'm tossing up the differences between a deisel KJ or Prado, both around the 2006-7 or 30-60k mark.
I know they are different vehicles but both potentially fit the requirements for me. What I really want is a capable, comfortable, economical 4x4, also reliable of course! I know there are a lot of compromises there but it is in that order.

I could ask this question in plenty of other forums and i would just get the usual, "Prado is best" with some jeep owners chiming in. But since everyone knows what a Prado is like I thought it best to ask in a place where people actually know what a Jeep is like. I would really like to know how they compare offroad, stock, and of course after some usual mods. If thats possible. Just some observations by people out driving would be good.
I am aware that the KJ has better approach, departure and ramp over angles than the Prado so on paper that suggests better offroad ability, (i know it comes down to more than that though) so I would like some real world observations.

One of the things that I'm considering is that even though i can get a very good deal on a Prado GX with good but basic options a common price for a comparable (in k's) KJ Limited could be $5 to $10k less, due to the difference in resale I guess. Thats a lot more bells and whistles and more money for mods!

PS size doesn't matter lol as I am single with no kids.

Prado has more room than the KJ, probably costs more to run as well.

Prado can breakdown easily if given the same treatment as a jeep.Mods

can be expensive. If you are single, get a JK,looks good, has heaps better

personality than any Toyota.Lets remember that Prado,s are driven by

those who have kids or by women and you dont wanna be identified as

having 3 kids already. Stand at a crossing and count how many Prado,s

have women and kids in them. Plus the JK has heaps better latte cred, i

would suppose.

I would expect insane running costs compared to a jeep. Expect 200

plus per week. A top of the range Renegade will be the same as a base

Prado and you dont look like a sheep considering there aren,t too many

JK,s around. And yeah you wouldn,t look bad wearing a Jeep T shirt and

getting out of one. I have heaps and wear them all the time.Imagine a

Toyota t shirt..

Check out "The Dog & Lemon Guide" published by Publications -2008- Ltd and then make your decision. It makes fascinating reading and I wish I'd read it 3 & a bit years ago.

As a 2007 KJ CRD owner, a vehicle I love by the way, I'd have to say that the Prado will always have better resale value. On the other hand, in Sydney every single Prado I see is "Mum's Bus" doing school runs. I know that some Grey Nomads like them for their reputed reliability, and ability to get parts and service anywhere in Australia. The Prado will cost more to operate, and over the life of the vehicle that may cancel out the higher resale value at the end. If you are an individual buy the Jeep, if your a herd kind of guy buy the Prado.
