3.8L CAI system
Hi guys,
Keen to put on a CAI system with a bigger intake. Was pretty surprised at where the stock intake is located, and how small it is.
I don't do water crossings or dust driving, so a snorkel is not 'must have' for me.
I've seen a few out there, so I was just wondering what systems are recommended and what systems to steer away from.
I'm in WA so if there are any bolt on systems that are compliant, I'd be interested in hearing about those.
Thanks

3.8L CAI system
Be careful what you put on, most CAI's are hot air intakes as they are not sealed from the under bonnet hot air, just an open box that sucks in hot air, if you really want to put one one, make sure it's fully sealed from the engine compartment or your just wasting your money on some shinny bling pipe that you only see with the bonnet up, the standard air box flows more than enough air even with a super charger fitted

I have the aFe version coupled with a TBS. It's the closed type and together with the TBS does produce a nice note. Does it make a difference in the performance or fuel economy? Slightly, but I doubt most would notice it.
Just manage your expectations

I know you say water isn't an issue, but my Cousin (with the OEM airbox) hydrolocked his JK and it was written off because the repair bill was going to be rediculous!! Personally, I would steer clear from an exposed CAI system if you do any kind of wheelin.
This is on my wish list:

Very similar to the OEM airbox, but better flow, the icing on the cake for me is that the AEV snorkel works with it.
Another option is the CAI from Rippmods:
http://www.rippmods.com/JEEP_Wrangle...jkcai-snrk.htm
Again compatiable with a snorkel, but I believe you have to order the extension piece that runs from the CAI to the snorkel.
If your looking at getting extra air in there, I've read other Jeep forums, where guys have run a throttle body from a Dodge Viper and I believe there is a memeber on AJOR who recently ordered one from the States. From what I've read the results are hit and miss, but most positive results are from guys who bolt it on and aren't using any tuners that provide a set tune (fuel eccon tune), as it has caused the JK to think it's running lean and it throws out an error and goes to LIMP mode.
But realisticly, you need to put the JK on a dyno to see if it's really gaining kw/nm, or if it's just snakeoil. If you're going to spend money on something like the above, perhaps just put that cash aside and set up a savings plan for a supercharger

Be careful about the filter..... sure you can get extra flow with poorer filters ( like K&N ) but it comes at the expense of filtering efficiency which on a 4WD is pretty critical IMO.
With the Jeep culture of modifying EVERYTHING its hard to admit that the standard paper filter actually works well but it does....
