Thanks Chris (and others) for your commiserations.
There is a reason why they fail - it is a known Mecerdes fault! Unsure which Merc vehicles have the same problem, however any Chrysler vehicle fitted with this engine will suffer this breakdown many times in its lifetime.
This time it turned into a $4000 job most of which was covered by aftermarket warranty.
(Swirl motor, linkages, inlet manifold, vanes, gaskets etc)
You can cope with breakdowns but when your vehicle is off the road for the second time for the same issue its time to take some radical action!
Here's a list of my Jeep issues in three and a half years and 125,000 Km -
Front window winder modules
Rear diff re-build
LH front driver shaft, CV joint seals & bearing
Electronic Brake Module short/failure
Swirl Motor and seal (first time)
Blown radiator
Swirl Motor, Seal, Linkages, Inlet Manifold, gaskets etc (second time)
Three Batteries
Weeks of inconvenience whilst travelling.
Dodgy dealership at Rockhampton who couldn't fix my vehicle and left it splattered in mud and minus a bash plate when picked up, fixed in Townsville by a reputable dealer (Chrysler paid a night out on the town and accomodation to square off with us for the Rocky incompentence)
Throughout all of this Chrysler Customer Service have been extremely helpful, but it cast a query of reliability on their product and the end of the road for me and Jeep.
I traded it on a Mitsubishi Pajero, now the constantly breaking down Jeep is someone else's problem.
