Yes the CRD does have a Balance Shaft...are you sure that yours is the 2.8L and not the 2.5L?
I suppose it is possible that this Balance Shaft's Bearings may fail.
My May 2002 2.5 CRD had the engine re-done by the Jeep Agents after Panelbeaters decided to not fill up the radiator properly.
When I picked up the Jeep from the Dealers it had a bad engine vibration!
I drove a few kms and turned back and handed the Agents the keys and told them to fix the problem.
When I picked the Jeep up a few days later it was perfect!
The Workshop Manager explained that the Balance Shaft has a Pin to lock it into the correct position when being installed and in this case they had used the Pin position for the 2.8L instead of the 2.5L which caused the imbalance!
But if the bottom end of your motor has not been touched I would rather suspect that the "Timing Belt" was not fitted properly if that is the "belt" that you are refering to!
Is the Alternator Pulley OK? This has a one-way clutch fitted inside it which can fail over time...lots of posts here on the Forum on how to replace it!
Service manuals for the KJ are on the Home Page.
