6 June 1944
On this day in 1944, Operation Neptune - better known as D-Day was launched.
The long awaiting Allied invasion of Europe began with 23000 troops 'dropping in' by parachute or glider and another 156000 storming 5 beaches at Normandy which were code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

An estimated 50000 vehicles were involved including our beloved Jeeps - many of which would not last the day.

At the time of D-Day, a combat Jeep had a life-expectency of just 90 days and Ford were cranking out 1700 GPWs per week at 5 different factories to keep up with demand and charging the US government $925 for each one.

Long flexy snorkel for water landing.
Looks like someone forgot to pull the floor plugs \/

British Airborne troops with an overloaded trailer.
The airborne Jeeps had many distinctive features-
Cut down 'stubby' bumper helped when getting the Jeep in and out of aircraft.
Also note original 'angry' lights \/

Some Jeeps didn't make it - a combat Jeep was only expected to last 90 days \/
