Default Towing capacities

Hi everyone

Xj 97

My towing limit is 2600, but am unfamiliar with the expression 114 on the ball. What does that mean? Is that the tarre weight of the trailer on the tow ball?

Also, the trailer I am looking at does not have breaks, do you think this would be an issue? thats a tarreweight of 750 plus a max load of 1.4=2150. at what weight point should I consider trailer with breaks?

Cheers Rocks

No Brakes on a trailer is allowed up to 750kilograms Gross Trailer Mass. GTM is the trailer plus it's load minus the ball weight.

The 114 on your tow ball could mean the maximum ball load allowed but not seeing it makes it hard to tell.

So you'll need brakes on the trailer to make it legal. Also find out what the 114 on your tow ball is. Put up a photo!

114 is the maximum weight permitted on the towball - downforce.

Any trailer with a GTM over 750 kg must have brakes - usually self activated mechanical overide.

Trailers with a GTM over 2000kg must have electric brakes fitted. This will require a Redark or Tetonksha brake controller fitted to the tow vehicle.

Definitely add trailer brakes and go for the ones that work off an accelerometer (like redarc), your life is worth it and the law requires it.

The ball weight is how much load the trailer places on the tow ball, this can be easily measure by putting a scale under the jockey wheel before hitching it up with the trailer level. It won't be exact but will be close enough to ensure you are not exceeding it.

For Vans, but applies to trailers as well.
