Unhappy 1997 xj immobilizer issues

the immobilizer in my xj has been giving me a few issues, it takes a few pushes of the remote to turn the immobilizer off, it has been getting worse and worse i have now been having to hold the remote up the the over head console, went to start it today and there was nothing, the immobilizer was on and couldn't be turned off from the remote.

does anything have any suggestions or know how this can be fixed?
much appreciated

Check the batteries again anyway.

See if anything in this link is helpful.

Rumour has it - that just like some commodores, mitsubishis etc., ... the system can be upset by cell tower or similiar, interference.

If in the morning - it doesnt unlock with the first press of the unlock button,

... try pressing the lock button ... and then press the unlock button.

Worse comes to worst I can sell you a complete 98 set up that should solve your issue. Lets hope it doesn't come to that as it's a fairly big job doing a complete swap.

Regards A

The Cherokee XJ engine immobiliser issue, tell me all about it.
There are many many threads on this over the internet, and many "rain dance" so-called solutions, with none of them offering any permanent solution to this.
I'm happy to go through all of it with you, since I spent many hours reading up on this immobilisier, but I suggest you spend some time reading the threads on this first (including mine

But put a new battery in the remote first, disconnect the battery for a while and try again, as a first step for now.

The fact that the range has been decreasing SHOULD be the giveaway that the battery is getting weaker!!!!
