Default 150,000km Transmission Service

The odometer is ticking up closer to 150,000kms
So tomorrow's job is to service the automatic transmission

Filter, harness connector, valve body upgrade kit, conductor plate update,
sand cast alloy pan from PML ATF fluid meets Mercedes Benz spec 216.14
The new pan requires a cork gasket but I will form a silicon gasket.
Better luck tomorrow, please God
(Hopefully no one has been in there before)

Thanks for taking the time to document this. This is on the list for White Cloud so I'll take all the information I can get!

Cheers,

Chris.

Luckily I had access to the hoist at work for this one
I got a 20 litre drum and cut the top out
and used this to catch the oil
First up loosen the two rear pan bolts (evenly and gradually)

When the oil stops flowing, remove the two rear bolts
then gradually and evenly loosen the two pan centre bolts
until all the fluid has drained away

Loosen and remove the front two pan bolts whilst holding the
pan level with your free hand. Easier said than done because by
now you're covered in transmission fluid, if you're lucky, up
to your elbows If you're unlucky; up to your armpits

It took me a while to work the electrical connector loose
Front right of pan there is a huge spiral plug connector
Spray with favourite brand of slippery stuff,
back and forth, back and forth, more spray
The connection has to turn at least half a turn to remove the wiring harness.

Once the harness is disconnected, you will need a 7mm socket
to loosen the harness connector centre bolt.
Removed

10 bolts hold the valve body in place,
they are the ones at the front and rear of the valve body.

With the conductor plate (plastic thingy) facing upward
Remove three clamps holding the solenoids in,
simply lift the solenoids upward and out.
Keep the solenoids in the right order
There are two plastic clips diagonally opposite, which secure
the conductor plate to the vale bodies.
Unclip the one under the harness connector
and lever the other side with a screwdriver.

Hopefully your bench will look something like this

Default 722.6 Valve Body Kit

You do NOT need to split the valve bodies to install the TransGo kit
The instruction are simple to follow
There are four places to access the spool valves
So correctly orienting the valve bodies is important
Here's a couple of the changes

They also recommend swapping out the solenoid o'rings
And four of the six solenoids were loose enough to warrant this

I only managed to drain 3 litres of murky brown fluid fruid from my trans
Well that's probably not right cause there's a heap on me and the ground too
So tomorrow I will see of I can find a way to drain more
Manual lists fluid capacity at 7.7 litres
So there must be more there somewhere

Why didn't you use the drain in the sump then undo the pan

The manual is wrong (TSB about that I think) Pan & filter should be about 3.5 to 5.5 litres
