Default Window Regulator - Cheap Fix Achieved!!

Discovered the small nylon block that holds the ends of the cables had broken allowing one of the cables to come out. I bonded it in place with epoxy, then wrapped the entire thing with braided no-stretch fishing line, then coated and filled all voids with epoxy. All put back together and working like new! So it can be fixed for almost no cost if the cable has not been damaged.

Hey Guys.

The rear passenger window on my '03 WG seems to have dropped off the support cradle and is now permanently down/open. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and has advice on the fix. I can hear the mechanism whirring when the up/down button is pushed but not connected to the window it seems. I've removed the screw at the door handle and started to pull at the internal door liner but as usual don't want to break anything. I am currently assuming the only way this can be fixed is to remove the panel.

All advice greatly accepted, as long as it's somewhat relevant of course.

EDIT; I've taken off the liner and the plastic film to look inside the door and have noted a stainless cable that appears to have come off a pulley somewhere. Currently it's sitting at the base of the window still attached to it but loose.

EDIT EDIT; Looking on Youtube it seems I will have to remove the entire regulator and see if it's fixable but doubt that will be the case. I've just looked at Rock Auto who have them for $36USD plus delivery with no motor. I'm pretty sure the motor is fine but will check that out further. Will check with local suppliers tomorrow.

It’s a pretty well known issue, the small plastic pulley that the cable runs around fails and the cable can sometimes bind up the motor.

Replacing them is fairly easy, and I just bought complete regulator assemblies, unbolt the old, bolt in the new, hey presto! Good as new.

Further to that, it is possible to buy a repair kit with a brass pulley but I figured my motors were x years old at the time of failure, why bother, just replace the whole unit.

Skipper thanks for that. The motor certainly ups the cost. Where’d you source yours and how much?

So as an update, I got prices of $340 plus shipping of $30 for a new regulator, or $240 plus $30 for a second hand, or Rock Auto have them for around $180AUD shipped from the US, so if I'm lucky about a week or more without a lockable car.

I pulled out my regulator and found that the nylon clip that the end of the cable sits in had broken allowing the end of the cable to pop out. F' me, it's a 20 cent piece of plastic FFS. So I've fitted the end of the cable back into it (exactly the same setup as the cable on your push bike), have bedded it in Araldite, wrapped braided fishing line around it all, then further glued it all together. Total cost? So far a couple of hours of my time and that's it.

Currently letting it dry and will look to tension the cable up tomorrow and see how it all goes. Hopefully I'll save myself a shitload of cash. Will let you know.

The bit of plastic indiedog mentioned is the common piece that breaks, sometimes the cable gets mangled on the pulley, if so in my experience it's game over.

Here are a few eBay options, I've got one in my front door and it's been fine.

No point buying these parts from rock auto.

Bodgie, awesome link, thanks. $90 and local is a much better option than those I mentioned. First up I'm going to put together my patched up option and see how it goes. If it fails then eBay it is.
