Default WK2 Head Removal and Clean

Hi all, need any advice or help of anyone that has had experience in removing and cleaning the heads (particularly the inlet ports) on an Ecodiesel.

I just fitted a catch can to my 2014 JGC 3.0lt Ecodiesel and while cleaning the EGR tube and MAF sensor, realised the intake manifold was absolutely caked in black sticky soot! The swirl valves were so caked i am sure they were not operating properly. I have done a thorough clean and it comes up brand new! I have attached a before and after shot for entertainment!

My problem now is that I have realised the intake ports into the cylinder head are also very badly blocked and looks like the injectors are also pretty bad from what i can see down the inlet port.

As I have come this far, I was thinking of going all the way and removing the heads in order to clean thoroughly. Obviously a big job but I am keen to know if there is anyone that has done the same and if there are too many specialist items/tools/aspects that may prevent my success!

Alternative is tow or remove engine and take it to a specialist but still a job and more cost. Also keen to know if anyone has used cleaners or the like with success with engine still in place?

Keen for any advice or recommendations the group may have around amount of time or complication. Fairly mechanically minded, plenty of tools and have some experience in pulling old petrol engines.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Troutman. Yes I was pretty shocked when I pulled it out! Frankly, I can't believe it was running as well as it was. These PCV and EGR systems just strangle the engine with the amount of oil and fuel being pumped back in.

Has done 143k kilometres. Been serviced regularly and maintained. Always try and drive long kms when possible. Plenty of long trips, some short with family run-arounds etc but nothing less than 10-15kms.

Thanks for the info mate. Mine has done 32k and I put a catch can on at around 1000 k's, so I hope it's doing a good job. Haven't cleaned the EGR yet, so that might be an indication of how gummed up she is.

No problems and great to hear you got that catch can in early. I certainly wish I had as you could imagine
I had one run in the Jeep with the new catch can before i started the clean. I have installed some clear hose work so i can visually inspect and even after a single run there is clearly oil build up going into the can!

Cheers

By the way, how much oil do you normally catch? Which Catch Can did you run with and good to know if its effective. I went with the new Ryco RCC350, seems well built and hoping it will work well.

I have the Flashlube can fitted Jimmy, usually drain around 300ml or so every 5000 k's.
