Default Idle hunting!

To add to list of problems with the XJ,today when stopped at lights the idle would hunt.It would fluctuate reasonably quick between 600 and 1000 rpm. Also at start up it idles at around 2300 rpm for the first 5 few seconds and then slowly drops.Could this be a IAC Motor problem or MAP sensor? any help appreciated

Cheers

Could be the TPS. Idle will gradually stay high for longer as it gets worse. Also you will notice a loss in power if it's the TPS.

sounds exactly like my 97 xj was doing. i pulled the fault codes and i got code 25 (idle air control sensor). replaced this part and the xj ran sweet and idled properly. its a really easy job as long as youve got a torx bit. I found the fault codes here http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoECUcodes.htm hope this helps?

My TJ was doing this the other week and it turned out to be a very dirt air cleaner. Once a new one was in it returned to normal.

Its an intermittent problem so dont know if that narrows it down.Drove it this morning and it was ok.Still felt a little down on power at times.Pulled air cleaner out actually and gave it a bit of a clean as its fairley new but didnt fix the iss ue in this case.
