Fil,
I have worked with refrigerants for a long time, and the MSDS on r134a, r404 etc are all equally as flammable. The difference is that I would prefer 200g of Hychill to catch fire than 900g of R134a or the 70l of petrol in the tank. I have recharged a lot of cars with minus 30 and everyone that has had it in their car loves it. I've also put it into my home fridges, freezers and aircon units. Saving of over $1000 a year in electricity. It is also a low weight gas so it escapes within ms and not secs like R134a which hangs around. It also costs (for someone who has the stuff to do it properly) about $9.00 a car and not $130, and you need to clearly identify that the system is charged with it as a top up with R134a into a minus 30 system will not work.

that's odd , as hychilly say it will mix ?
and I have done so with a xj that is still running and getting cold (the whole system was really poor) .

You will probably find that the R134A was too low so there is more hychill than residual R134A. You probably got one of their recharge cans and put the whole lot in ?? Most auto systems take between 180-220 g of M30. But if the system has a full new charge of hychill then it cannot be mixed. The first point to note is that if you have a system that has been depleting R134 and is at 50% charge, and you then top up with hychill, the head pressures will be wrong, you may have overcharge/undercharge and the system is not working efficiently anyway. Without gauges you cannot tell anyway and for a mixed system what T&P chart do you use. Second point is, you take it to a repair guy, when he recovers the system (as a decent repairer would do) you have contaminated the whole tank. That is why they give out stickers with M30 that should be placed under the bonnet advising that M30 has been used. The hychill documents say that it is compatible for use in SYSTEMS that previously used the R12/R134 gases but it does not say it can be mixed. The service information on M30 say to recover 134a before recharging with M30.

Thank you all for contributing, the repairer has expressed concern that the hydraulic fan is not working properly. I did try to test this before giving the car to them by pulling off the plug to the coolant sensor. The fan did run at what seemed like a high speed, so I assumed it was ok. Is there a way to confirm and if it is no good what options do I have?

that's why I bought a manifold .
the xj didn't die with it.
they call it top up , wouldn't place a whole tin in , and of course one needs to weigh how much goes on , that is the whole idea of gauges .

scan tool , I do believe the sensor on the hydro fan can be replaced , rock auto . (its on the drivers sidetwo wire if I remember)
that's if you don't want to spend the money buying another fan , I have a spare , but to get it to you would cost a bit including what I want for it, (yes I give the top pipe with it that comes from power steer)
