Well,

Firstly, if the compressor is not working at all then:

Not enough gas, no gas/leak.. Need to put it on a set of gauges to check it.
Compressor electrical ie relay, fuse but after putting it on gauge.
If compressor going on and off rapidly, not enough gas. Cars generally need a top up after about 10 yrs.

What is the ac doing ?? Is it a little cool ? Compressor noisy ?? What are the symptoms?

Anything to do with your AC it's best to go to an AirCon Mob, get a test done to find the problem a motor mechanic is just guessing. As with all AC problems they can be expensive be it a Jeep or a Ford so find someone you can trust. I could go into a long winded diagnosis for you to do but in the end you need an AC fella to sort things out they have the gear, a test is not expensive.

Don't go to the dealer, it will cost you an enormous amount of $$$ they will take forever to get parts and they only have complete units very rarely the small bit thats broken, as I said before go to a professional AC repair shop, they are far more economical and efficient than your dealer.
Last time I had my Jeeps AC fixed the cost was $450 less than the dealer quote and it was fixed in a week as the part came from Singapore with the dealer giving me a 4 week lead time as the part had to come from the USA which I knew was BS anyway.

Dealer is definately last resort. They are not A/C specialists and if tprice ont just replace it they would sub it out and put their own profit on top. What does your mechanic know about A/C it could be a seal bypassing or something similar.

dealer is last resort for anything At their prices. Like Drover I got a price of $450 to replace a hose that ended up costing me $50.
