yes mate I know but the garden hose up the lower rad hose or heater hose is not going to shift anything. My XJ is now 20 years old 340,000 km's and still goes well. I started off with the Valiants as my first cars and this engine block scale showed up all the time as these cars were not looked after as good as the newer stuff of today. It taught me a lot as a young bloke as to how important coolant and clean water is. Water pumps that are cheap are that cheap.

I have several genuine jeep water pumps that I show people to compare with the cheaper ones. The stand outs are the bearings conditions noise, feel ect and the importance of the correct impeller and the clearance's between the impeller and the machined surface that runs under the impeller. I have two genuine pumps with 340,000km's and 360,000km's and the bearings are fine not rough and the seal was not leaking.

They were changed out due to corrosion under the water pump gasket machined surface area. GMB at 82,000 km's bearings were noisy and the seal of course was leaking. these bearing are important for holding on to your fan and not let it go into the radiator as I have seen on one of my old Valiants. This is why I only run genuine or the bosch type as they have been good quality. Just keep up the flushing. Compressed air used carefully also helps a lot to in shifting rust and rubbish.

Speaking of regular flushing and engine block scale...

When I was chasing an overheating problem my XJ was running hot around town and on the freeway, sitting at 105*C instead of 95*C, even hotter uphill. I replaced the whole cooling system one part at a time including the radiator, viscous fan clutch, fan belt, thermostat and housing, temp sender, water pump, coolant, upper and lower radiator hoses, radiator cap, tested the thermo fan, flushed the radiator and engine block, replaced the muffler and checked for exhaust blockages. Nothing made any difference so I suspected a blown head gasket but there were none of the usual signs…no white smoke, bubbles in the radiator, or contaminated oil or spark plugs etc.

A friend offered to pull the tank off my old radiator and take a look inside to see if there were any blockages. I doubted it would be a radiator problem because I’d only just replaced it with a near new radiator from another XJ (both Adrad brand) and when I flushed both radiators out the water was clean. The attached photos show what was inside my radiator. It was 25% blocked with scale and silicon!

We gave it a good clean and put it back in my Jeep and I gave the a/c condenser a blast with the high pressure hose while the radiator was out. I was surprised at the amount of dirt that came out of it considering I always give it a spray through the front grill after each trip. My XJ’s running cool again now so the problem was the clogged radiator core or a dirty a/c condenser, or a combination of the two. It turns out the near new radiator I used only had 27 tubes compared to the 39 tubes my old radiator had. The owner of the newer radiator said it was an Adrad brand so I just assumed it would be the same as mine, it wasn't.

If you have a blocked radiator you might not be able to tell because as I discovered even flushing it out with a hose didn’t get the crap out of the tubes, and the water looked clean. I'll definitely be flushing it out more regularly in future and I'll be a bit more careful with the amount of silicon I use on the water pump and thermostat housing!

Siliworms!!!

I haven't used silicon on my motors for I don't know how long. For that very reason.
And now, because of sensors also, although sensor safe sealants are available now.

cheers

Cool

Hello fellow XJers

first post!

Regarding the overheating issues with the XJ, I must say I have never been as frustrated with a problem as I am with this. It truly is an XJ thing.

Following are my mods to overcome this issue:

NEW:- upper radiator hose
lower radiator hose
thermostat housing
thermostat
water pump
vented bonnet
bonnet lift
2core radiator
with 3 shrouded electric fans
flushed numerous times and always been clean when done
pressure tested and checked for carbon in system - no issues there
30/70 coolant/demineralised h2o
stainless extractors
cold air intake

There are no leaks, no air in the system, belt is fine, pump runs well, the three fans pull like a cyclone and guess what?

IT STILL IS OVERHEATING - ahrrrrrrrrrrr

talk about frustrating.

What temp is it running at?

Have you cleaned the AC core as well as the radiator core to ensure good airflow?

When you flushed the system did you use a quality chemical flush?

hello junglejuice

On a good climb it will boil, on a soft climb on a hot day it will boil.

I end up stopping and let it idle until it cools. With all fans running it cools fairly quickly. The radiator is pretty much new so no obstructions there and I do not run an air con, however I am thinking of using the compressor for on board air. The trans cooler is new and clean as I do not run it through the radiator.

I am stumped.
