Default I'm back! With another XJ Classic, of course...

It's been four years but I've finally got back to an XJ - I bought another MY01 Cherokee Classic this arvo.

It has done a fairly low 162,000km and while it's a bit rough around the edges it's basically sound. Even though it seems to have been regularly serviced (service sticker on windscreen and service book stamped, up to date, engine oil fresh) it might have front diff problems (it has the same whirring sound my last Classic had from the front) but I've budgeted $2k to get it up to scratch. Last time I priced it, it was $750 for a D30 rebuild, probably more now. Getting ahead of myself - could just be the front uni.

I missed a couple of great low-kay Classics earlier in the year but I wasn't ready to buy. As they get older, it sure doesn't get any easier to find good ones.

Anyway, it's good to be back. Driving back in the XJ, it felt like home. Don't know quite how else to explain it.

Hi , yes they do feel like home. Before you rebuild the front diff of your car,I have a hi pinion from a 1999 model you can have for $100. I put one of these in my 2001, its better if the jeep is to be lifted.
regards aaron.

Thanks - I might take you up on that, just got to check if I have the 3.55:1 or 3.73:1 diff ratios.

I'm also still trying to figure out of it's the diff or just unis. Trying to find a Youtube video with the same sound, no luck as yet.

It mostly makes a whirring sound that increases in intensity with speed, from about 20km/h onwards, no change when lifting off or if I select neutral when rolling along.

Then I selected full-time 4WD yesterday as a rolled along at 50km/h and it made a few weird noises, different with throttle on/backing off. I went back to 2WD and it died down eventually, but there was a single clunk or pop from the front as I took a 90-degree left turn. It didn't do any of that when I selected 4WD when I test-drove it or when I tried the same thing today.
