Default XJ towing capacities differing

Does anyone know why the 1997 XJ's onwards have a towing capacity of only 2265 kg? I'm sure my 1995 XJ Sport had a 3 ton plus (carpoint.com.au has pre 96's as having 3300 kg) capacity.

This sucks, as I have effectively traded down when I sold the 95 Sport and bought my 01 Limited.

Is there any way of getting the capacity back up there (with engineering and certificates etc) to 3 ton? It looks like I may need to 'downgrade' or get another car to tow (boat is just over 3t).

Carpoint is incorrect, the pre-updates are also around 2300kg GTW, or 5000lbs. Maximum ball weight is 340kg.

This is from the 1995 FSM.

I have a genuine Jeep towbar fitted to my '95 model and its maximum load is 2265kg and 114 on the ball, I have a Hayman Reece unit sitting in the shed which is rated at 3000kg, go figure.....
I wouldn't want to tow 3t behind a unibody vehicle anyway....

I wouldnt want to tow that much behind a XJ without some pretty serious trailer brakes! I have always wondered how they came up with such a high number for the XJs.

poor l'il D35 ....

Chryco 8.25 seems OK ....

3 tonnes is not so bad .. with careful driving.

Altho it is funny to see the look on a prado owners face when passed by two XJs up a hill ... and one doesnt have an engine in it ....

Stock transmission cooler ???? .... what stock transmission cooler ????

Ohhhhh ...

........that little thing that probably only lowers oil temps to the same temps that a U.S. XJ runs at - without one fitted

Yeah its a fail ....

Roger that. Thanks for the info.

Brakes wouldn't be an issue - trailer's brakes with electronic controller are probably the strong point. Shame I have to find another way to legally tow the boat 3 km to the ramp!

I love my jeep... but I can only justify so many vehicles!
