Default Overheated now just a thump when try to turnover

Hi all

Fearing the worst

My Jeep overheated out of the blue. Was at motorway speed and the check gauges clicked lost power, pulled over and when tried to restart there is just a thump: battery good

Bubbling water in the reservoir and steam billowing out.

Had to get towed home and was hoping when I got back it might at least turn over but no luck

2.7 crd

And just to update mechanic had a quick look, he had to turn shaft with a spanner and now turning over but no compression.

He’ll look at it better tomorrow but not very confident it will an easy fix

At a guess in the absence of more detailed information I’d say the water pump fail, probably spun the shaft in the impeller, and cooked the engine. If you can spin the engine without compression I’d be thinking a catastrophic head failure.

You MIGHT be lucky and replace the head and pump and away you go.

Be prepared for a new engine though as you may also have significant galling in the sleeves.

The engine doesn't sound good at all, no compression could mean many things. The only way to work out there the problem, is to start pulling parts off an having a look.

Depending on the K's the water pump may have been the source of the problem. Mine was rooted at 235,000km, the bearing was completely stuffed and the shaft was flopping about, but surprisingly not leaking.

A bad injector or two could have also burnt a hole in the top of the piston too.

It will be interesting to see what you find.
