Default "check engine" light coming on

while driving home the other day the 'check engine' light decided to appear.

I had been travelling down the freeway for 2 hrs at 110 km/h when it appeared. I pulled over left the engine running, and got out and checked it. Turned it off, checked over it and all the fluid levels. And all appeared fine. I got back in and took off, the light didn't come on for another 5 minutes. I then drove for about another 30 mins. and stopped for about 20 mins, when i got back in and started driving again the light never came on. I drove around for a couple of days at 100 km/h and it didn't come on, and everything appeared normal.

Back on the freeway 2 days later, the light came on again. stayed on til i got to melbourne. I stopped when i hit 60km zone. and the light hasn't come on since (3days later)

can anyone shed some light on why this is happening, or what i can do to find out (before i bite the bullet and hand my wallet to the dealer)

thanks
Dale

Not all XJ's have the error check facility. I spent half an hour one day looking at a flashing display only to discover that it was just a flashing display.

98 on you can only check with a scanner. Before that you can read them as outlined on my site. It can be many things that set it off and even not doing up the petrol cap hard can do it!
