Default 97 Diesel will crank but won't start...help?

Hi all, I've got the opportunity to acquire (given!) a 97 diesel Cherokee. Problem is it will crank fine but won't start. The problem just appeared when the current owner was sitting in traffic and the car just stopped, no rough running, no warning lights etc. Tried restarting and all it would do is crank over. I've primed it and can get diesel to the pump, but not up to the injectors, almost like the stop solenoid is not operating. Anybody have any ideas?
I'm debating whether to invest any time and money into it or not

Spray WD40 in the air inlet while cranking. It should start & run on WD40. I have done this many times with diesels. If the fuel system is bled & still no fuel at injectors, sounds like shut down is the problem. You should be able to put power direct to it.

Thanks for the reply. It has been at a mechanic's who did manage to get it to run on brakeclean or something like you suggest, and apparently he also checked the stop solenoid and believed it to be ok. I'm a diesel mechanic myself so will get to the bottom of it, but was hoping there might be a quick answer to save me tearing out the small amount of hair I have left in the process. I think it has to be electrical to just stop without warning like it did. Seems odd though that there is no CEL or anything. Anyway I'll drag the poor old thing home in a few weeks and see what I can find. If I have no luck there maybe some cheap Cherokee parts available

OBD doesnt show faults on the engine. You need a DBR 11 reader. Only dealers have them. If its no power to the shut down, then it wont show a fault. it just will think its off. probably just a bad connection.

Thanks Layback, hope you're right and it's just a connection. Are the DBR readers fairly specific or a bit vague?

DBR is a jeep/chrysler thing. very specific. OBD will not talk to the ECU in a diesel XJ. I have seen DBR readers on ebay at times for well over $1k .

Ah ok, don't think I'll be getting one of them! I actually meant are they specific with the codes/faults Some diagnostic systems I've used kind of just point you in the right direction where as others pin point the fault. Might be worth a trip to a dealer while I have it on a trailer towing it home and see what it reads.
