Default CJ distributor and carb suggestions

Hi,

First post in a LONG time, used to get on here a bit when I was first putting my Jeep together in the early 2000's. I've recently decided to get it back on the road after sitting in my garage for nearly 6 years. It was in decent condition however the engine needed a bit of work. I've spent the last few months rebuilding the old 232 and now its time to find a new distributor to replace the old points dizzy and a new carb so I can lose the original Carter. Jeep is a 74' CJ5 by the way.

From the research I've done so far it looks like the best direction in regard to the distributor is to source an original Motorcraft and upgrade with new cap, coil, wires, rotor, etc. The HEI option looks to be popular however there also seems to be plenty of people who have issues with it. I'm having issues sourcing a Motorcraft dizzy, does anyone know of any other vehicle these came standard in? Are they readily available here in aus? If anyone had one to sell i'd be interested to hear or if they could suggest where to source one that would be great.

Second issue is the carb. Was originally going to use a 350 Holley as they're easy to find however have been reading about issues when is comes to angles. People seem to be getting good results with Webers and the US guys all say to use a Motorcraft 2100. Again the Motorcraft seems to be difficult to source (or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places) so any suggestion in this regard would be appreciated. Would also love to hear your suggestions for what setups you think work best.

I'm not overly concerned with outright HP, just want something reliable and easy to maintain. Would love to be able to take it down the beach in summer plus some mild off roading and not be concerned about getting back at the end of the day.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

I would go with the motorcraft 2100. I haven't heard a bad review about them yet! They are very popular in the U.S. amongst the rock crawlers, they call the 2100's "poor mans fuel injection"
I have managed to buy a few in the past few months on eBay, paying about $50-$60 plus postage.
They were standard on late 60's to mid 70's fords with a 289/302 Windsor engine, as well as the amc V8's so they are around.
I haven't had much luck for a rebuild kit locally but there's plenty available via the U.S.
There's also different sizes to, I'm not sure what size is best for you so do a search on the U.S. forums.
Let us know what you decide and how it runs!
Cheers Danny

I'm a little late to the party but just a heads up for you. The Ford duraspark dizzy is very temperamental and u reliable. Your 74 should have a gm style points dizzy. I would suggest just replacing the points with a Pertronics electronic or similar unit and a better coil or the DUI HEI unit. I run a 75 258 with a 74 dizzy, Pertronics chip and Blaster 2 coil. Think plugs are at .050 gap. Hasn't let me down in 10 years. Ford Duracrap was quitting at random and I remember my dads shop used to change the modules on regular basis during the 70's and 80's

Good luck
