bumping this thread, I'm getting a fairly persistent p0420 and on inspection it looks like there has been a slight leak from the rhd fwd cat, also the headers and cats visually look like they are on their last legs. Power is good (well not reduced) and exhaust noise is fine. Weighing up the options normally I'm all about if it's not on the maintenance schedule and isn't broke don't fix it, on the other hand I'm in this vehicle long term so not to concerned about decent upgrades. Has anyone gone with a new set up? i'm thinking a 10 year birthday present of shorty headers high flow cats and y piece. Appreciate the advice

From reading on US JK sites, (Wrangler Forum, JK Owners), several people had issues with heat damaged plug leads after installing shorty headers. HOWEVER, all theissues seemed to relate to headers that came with no heat shield.
So the take away is to make sure that whatever you get has decent heat shields, or reuses the stock ones.

And now I'm getting a P0420 as well. Mind you, it's an '08 with 156,000km on it, that's not entirely surprising.
Called the dealer to check price of OEM price of the Y piece with the cats... $3519.
Makes the RIPP long tubes look economical by comparison!
The most expensive OEM style on Rockauto, by comparison, is $442US...

Keep in mind that many of the aftermarket "compact" or "sports" CATS are pretty much useless..... mine lasted about a month before getting CAT codes. THe exhaust guy pretty much predicted it when he fitted them.
Good CATS are expensive
And on the headers.... make sure you go to the effort of fitting lots of heat shields and or ceramic coating them. They are well known for melting EVERY bit of nearby plastic.

Yes, I've read many of those threads! And the plug boots & leads as well! I remember many people, in the US in particular, trying them & having issues after the OEM headers cracked. I just like the RIPP as they move the cats further from the engine bay & reduce the heat under there. I think it's been killing my Optima Yellow Top.
From memory the RIPPs are designed to reuse the OEM heatshields. Of the other, shorty, headers, most don't. Still, I'd expect it to be expensive to get them shipped out.

my recommendation is if they aren't blocked and you have not noticed any drop in performance or change in engine noise go to your local low key muffler shop, they have options from about $100

Haven't had much luck with them in the past. One place I liked is out of business, 2 others have been rather dodgy in their results.
One made it drone badly inside, the other 'fixing' it installed a resonator & slightly larger muffler. Great. But now the weld wasn't quite right & the muffler putty they used to fill the gaps has fallen out, so I had to fix the leaks for rego last year. My temporary fix has, so far, held up better than their work.
And parts that should be clamped on are welded, so the only way to remove the cat back is with a grinder or hacksaw. Or drop the rear axle...
I'd be better off spending the money on parts & my own welder. And I havent welded anything for over 30 years.
