Good Luck my friend!
A short story ~
a few years ago when I went to get a roadworthy for my diesel XJ so I could reg it in Victoria. The mechanic found the number on a boss down on the left behind the IP IIRC. Problem was it was nothing like the number on the previous reg papers from QLD.
When I contacted the authorities, they initially treated me like I had a stolen car. Eventually I managed to speak with some one more senior (both in his position & age). He explained that when the engine was manufactured in Italy, VM stamped an industrial engine type number on the block. When it was shipped to Jeep in the USA, they were supposed to remove the number & stamp an automotive type engine number on it when it was fitted in the jeep. Often they didnt bother. When the jeep was first registered by the dealer, they didnt bother checking the number. They just did the paper work. It only shows up when some one bothers to check properly. Dont know how many XJ diesels this happened with.
Now you have the heads up for when the number doesnt look correct. I had to supply a stat dec to get it registered.
As I said before ~ Good Luck !
