When I had my XJ the number plate was just mounted on the bar (Kamar) on the opposite side to the wheel.
My sister in law (cop!) later told me this was illegal. It should have been mounted either directly under or in the middle of the the spare. I would post a pic but dont have one, sorry.
Hope this helps.

would you need a light on it too Moses?

I think you can just use plastic ties to the tyre/rim for a temp fix.

Mine has been like this for 8 years...........providing the view of the plate is not obstructed and it is illuminated you should be ok...the police have better things to do........we dont have 'waste of time annual' inspections in Queensland.

brix xj i dont like the way your spare is mounted.. it opens up to the drivers side or onto the road. if you were on the side of the road and had to get into the boot u will have to swing it into the road a little and run the risk of getting clobbered by other motorists. i got the haymen reese which opens up to the kurb for saftey.. how do you like yours?

Yep, my spare carrier is designed for left hand drive...besides opening into the traffic it also wants to swing shut all the time...on the positive side, I have had it for 8 years and it is robust, doesnt rattle and serves its purpose, to open the rear door it is not necessary to go beyond the width of the vehicle by much at all, maybe 100mm at most, as for it wanting to close..I have made up a simple bracket to hold it open so its really no big deal...the carrier is a genuine MOPAR unit, made in Canada, and cost $600 8 years ago, a lot less then a Hayman Reese.
