It is highly likely that with a full system flush and new filters, your car will run as well as before. We repair one to two misfuelled diesels a month and have not yet had to replace high pressure pumps or injectors.

It is however a case of suck it and see as there is a risk of damage to the HP pump. the less distance travelled after filling with petrol the better.

On a preventitive measure I have been selling fuel neck restrictors to prevent this. They will only allow fuel in when the correct size diesel nozzle is inserted. save a lot of pain when your mind isn't on the job.

It's in with a mechanic at the moment and the blown engine is a preliminary verdict as drain and flush didn't work. The latest however is a glimmer of hope in that a replaced injector is looking good so far, will know more tomorrow.

I am preparing for the worst with the insurance co though, hence going over the PDS in detail, as mentioned there is nothing really to indicate they won't cover it.

A restrictor sounds like a good idea, might contact you one if I get back on the road!

Sounds like a good idea to me, Where can I buy one from wrench?
Don't want it to happen to me too specially while the wife still drives a petrol KJ.

So had two unexpected calls today, first from the claims dept of Auto and General advising I'm covered and it's accidental damage. They did want a lot of info around how it came to happen and history of the vehicle to determine condition and if there could have been other factors (eg not servicing it), but we're otherwise fine about it. They even said it could be a write off in worst case scenario.

Second was from the mechanic advising its ready to go. Turned out the cylinders were in fact fine and it just needed a new injector and fuel cut-off solenoid. Still an expensive exercise though!

Just need to work out now if I'll claim (excess + rating 1 down to 3) or just suck it up...

Also going to get one of those fuel neck restrictors!!!

Glad to have my KJ back though

Thought you might be interested in this got it from the RACQ site.

iIf your diesel vehicle doesn’t have a built in mis-fuelling device it may be possible to fit one. RACQ now offers a range of Rightfuel Diesel Misfuelling Devices for popular models through selected RACQ branches and the RACQ Online Shop.

The diesel mis-fuelling device replaces the conventional filler cap and incorporates a locking flap which only allows the correct sized (low flow) diesel nozzle to be inserted. If an attempt to insert a petrol nozzle is made the flap won’t open and no fuel can be introduced.

To determine if there is a misfuelling device for your particular vehicle, refer to the document Diesel Misfuelling Devices suitable for fitment to Diesel Vehicles (PDF, 227KB). The device comes with fitting instructions and can be easily installed by the vehicle owner. No tools are required.

Note: If you need to fill from a high flow pump it will be necessary to remove the device from the filler neck, however this is likely to be a fairly infrequent necessity for most motorists.
