Steering Damper Skyjacker SJ-8009 (TJ 2004)
Hi,
Been having a bit of a bad run with steering dampers and was looking to replace mine. I originally took the OEM one off whilst diagnosing wobble, fixed the wobble with bushes, balljoints and alignment and was happily able to drive on the road without the damper.
Instead of putting the original one back on, I decided to replace with a Monroe SC2928 from Rockauto. All was well until I noticed after some off roading there was interference/collision between the damper body and the drag link. Not serious, but enough to start to score and crush a little.
So I replaced with a budget version KYB SS10317, listed as OEM replacement. This fitted fine, but a year later when I did a check I noticed it is leaking oil. So I am planning to replace again.
Jeep is only running 2" lift.
I'm debating whether to just replace with the standard unit or uprate to the Skyjacker Black MAX Heavy-Duty OEM replacement. My concern is I don't want to end up with interference again - but it would be nice to uprate and have a new part that does not hit or leak.
For reference in case anyone else out there is having similar problems.
Diameters:
Std unit, damper is 32mm, with the plastic shield 40mm.
KYB SS10317 = 41.5mm and has never hit the drag link.
Monroe SC2928 = 47.5 mm and where it has hit has been squeezed down to 46mm
So in my setup, anything bigger than 45mm is too big.
Question is - anyone with this Skyjacker SJ-80009 part out there that could accurately measure the diameter of the body of the damper?
Other question is - Skyjacker any good, just need it to damp and not leak!
Didn't really want to start major mods for this.
Thanks..
