Begun the task of removing or reducing the whine in my stereo. So far have taken the ground off the battery and relocated it to the lower seat belt bolt, as per recomendations on US Jeep sites. No go, problem still there. Next step is going to be increase the + cable from 10awg to 8awg and wrap it in conduit. I am also going to get the ferite rings as suggested on here. I am also going to put the RCA leads in conduit, for some extra insulation.
I have read on other sites that the alt may not be up to the task? I would have thought the almost new 98 Sport alt should have plenty in it. Although having said that the noise does get worse when the lights go on. Mind youi my old amp was the same wattage and had significantly less whining, it was almost unoticable.
Regards A

That sounds like a major mod moving the ground from the battery to the seat belt bolt!!!!
The whine you are referring to is generally caused by a ground loop meaning that there is a difference in the grounds and some current is being passed through the signal cables, turning on the lights just makes it worse.
It is a wiring issue that conduit is not going to fix it is caused by poor connections or insufficient cable sizes etc and sometimes poor quality equipment.
It is almost always caused by a ground somewhere in the car....
How EXACTLY do you have your sound system set up?

Head unit in normal place, RCA to amp which is then split at the amp to create the four channels as the deck only has one set. The ground is now on the seat belt bolt. The + cable is 10g which was fine on my old amp. To reduce some of the whine I have grounded one of the outer cores on the RCA cable to the seat bolt; this may a fair difference. Before that it was unbearable. Connecting it to the batteryt seemed to make little or no difference. The amp is a US Audio 400w 45rms. My old amp was an Audioline and made vertually no noise once I grounded the outer cable on the RCA. RCA's run down through the centre console to the amp under the passenger seat.
Not sure if sounds like I have moved the battery ground to the seat belt bolt but I have only moved the amp ground.

We're not talking great quality gear here but I would be trying the RCA splitter first, remove it and see if that changes anything then I would be looking at the ground at the battery and from the motor to the body, these are often overlooked and are extremely important...
