Default P41 recall

Just received the letter from FCA. Notice that they say 'if the concern is found' and the repair will take an hour 'if necessary'
Does this mean to say the 'problem' only exists in some cars?
Is there any risk of the dealer causing a new problem like they did with the N23 debacle?
I prefer to keep away from the local Jeep dealer if possible..

all i know is that its happened to me and ill be sure to mention it to the dealer. i was driving downhill, my knee knocked the key and all of a sudden I lost all power and the car had stalled. NICE! bit of a scary moment really

anyway, booked the jeep in today after the recall came in the mail today. I will insist that it gets looked at

The dealer will usually only program 2 keys. If you have 2 keys you can program a 3rd yourself. If you loose a key if you have 2 then you can program a 3rd again. If you only have 1 key you need the dealer to code the key.

The only negative is you are best to buy that 3rd key.
Low gear still works with the new key.

The fix makes it so you have to push the key inward to turn it.

I didn't do it, but my friend did.

05 to 07 get new key barrel only not new keys, 08 to 10 get new ignition & keys.

Got my letter 6 months ago & went to booked it in. They said they needed the car all day because its a Jeep so I said stick it.
It is only an hour job (I could do it myself), they were either unorganized, incompetent or both.

By the way I have never experienced the issue, my knee sits nowhere near the ignition while I'm driving.

I'm the same clarky......6'2" and my knees are nowhere near the ignition either when driving ....I've never knocked it getting in or out either.

I received my letter yesterday and it says the safety recall campaign P41 was launched because the ignition switch may experience an unintended change in position while driving.

I've never experienced that at any time even on rough dirt roads/offroading...mine's a 2007 model.

Sounds like the 08-10's must have different system.

Seeing it's a safety thing I guess it can't be ignored.

I can't see how you would knock it in the 09 model I have as the ignition is on the console side of the steering wheel.
If it did happen to me I would just knock it into neutral & restart the engine.

It must be the way some people sit. Either way I am ignoring it (got another letter yesterday).

Got my letter out of the post today too. Here's my thoughts:

Are the dealers likely to screw up my car with the recall, so I end up with no low range?

I have once knocked the key with my knee, but I am not an idiot and can re-start it, but I do get it's a safety recall.

I have a new ignition switch, like Clarky, and it's not as soft to turn through the detentes, so I reckon it's unlikely to happen again.

I just sold a Hemi WH that had the recall done, that dealer screwed up the keys and made it hell for the previous owner before me. I also found it particularly hard to turn the key, one of the keys had a stess fracture near the fob and it was about to break off in the ignition. I bet FCA won't pay for that to be resolved!

There are 3 screws on the 05-07 models that retain the switch to the dash, you could actually use a spacer and set the lock back into the dash about 20mm, virtually eliminating the chance of this happening. Unless you are a basketballer and like to sit close to the wheel!

I am so reluctant to take my car in to them, does anyone else feel the same?

Cheers,

Robert
