The correct term for a 'shock absorber' is a 'damper'. Technically, your springs 'absorb' the bumps, the 'dampers' control the springs' oscillations.
A 'stabiliser' can be a 'steering damper' - designed to reduce vibrations through the steering system. A good thing, especially with larger than standard tyres.
A 'stabiliser' could also mean a 'stabiliser bar' or 'sway bar' - better known as an 'anti-sway bar' or 'anti-roll bar'. This is simply a spring of sorts that is connected to the body of the vehicle and the suspension arm. There will be one for the front suspension and one for the rear. It is designed to resist the vehicle's body roll as cornering forces increase.
Clear as mud?

Oh yeah - and those Ranchos are a good thing. Should be much better than O.E. ( Original Equipment ).
