Tiny as far as I am aware it was only the diesels that got the yellow tops as my Petrol 08 model comes with the same black top battery as has been mentioned.

was about to say that it sounds like the battery had been shorted out.... Pretty hard to do with out blowing a main fuse, but not impossible - if its done via a low current circuit....

The 'black top' battery - are they a gell cell or lead acid?

Tiny since when does anything Jeep does make sense?? Its obviously a cost saving measure as the Diesel requires a better battery to start it

the diesel runs an 850cla gel deep cycle battery, and a 180 amp alternator which can run a winch directly off the alternator output. is a totally upgraded system compared to the petrol. built for hard work.

New batt fitted today (well almost) Dealer has to order one in so they gave me one out of a stock vehicle for now.
Also we discussed general battery failure and I was told that the yellow tops have failed on a regular basis.
Interestingly other jeeps like Cherokees and so on, have battery sensors fitted.
This stops them overcharging by sensing the heat factor at the base of the battery.
For some reason the JK 07 model does not have a sensor and a lot of yellow tops have warped, bloated and failed due to the excessive heat and continuous charging.
Some batteries will handle this better than others. Jeep are aware this may be an issue.
