Default '03 2.5 CRD bleed air out of fuel every morning

Hey guys!

First time posting, but I recently picked up a 2003 2.5 CRD with less than 190k on the clock.

The only major issue I'm looking at fixing now is that everytime the car sits for a few hours, it will start and then cut out a few seconds later. Turn the key and it won't fire for probably about 30 seconds, just straight engine turning and never igniting. After a few attempts of turning over the engine, it will finally fire up and we are good.

If I prime the fuel filter, this is normally avoided and it will start fine.

Is this a common or well known issue and is it easy enough to fix?

I'm thinking I need to replace filter and filter head to start?

Thanks guys

Caleb

We went through a spell of that, I replaced all of the flexible fuel lines and double clamped them and all has been fine since. Just be aware that if there is a bit of gunk in the fuel tank that can give you more vacuum through the lines and increase the likelihood of it wanting to suck air in through the joints. 3/8fuel line if you need to buy some.

Doug.

Filter change is always a good thing unless you know it was changed recently. The older filter heads had an issue with one of the electrical connections going bad. Have a good look at the terminals & make sure there are no signs of overheating or fuel leaking when you prime it. If all else fails you could install an in tank fuel pump like the petrol ones have or a cheap inline pump.
Good Luck!

My '02 2.5 did this as well. I'd back down the driveway and then it'd conk out. Prime the fuel pump and away she'd go.

The fix for me was getting a new fuel filter head. Apparently small cracks can appear over time and air seeps in. I got mine from Brendale on the north side of Brisbane, should be able to find the details if you need.

That would be awesome if you could, I suspect air is getting in through the filter head.

Thank you!

I changed our filter head out a couple of months ago, got it from IDParts in the US, cheaper than buying locally. Plus I buy most of my parts from RockAuto, faster and cheaper than local.

Just as a reference, I think yours is the same as mine. This is the Mk2 fuel head I bought, it has the upgraded electric connections for the fuel heater.
