Default Traction Control off-road

The point of this post is to see how people use there traction control off-road and how they use It. I have been doing to 7 second hold myself to turn it off but i have seen some general 4WD blogs and the like as of late that say traction control can be a great help of road. So lets share how the factory traction control on our Jk's is a Help or a pain. And even how well it works for those of us that are lucky enough to have lockers.

I think it's great. Very good when over flexing on terrain where there is decent traction (deep, smooth ruts etc). Following a similarly set up swb patrol with lsd it is evident traction control helps enormously. Where the patrol sometimes requires momentum the jk can stop anywhere and get going easily. Not convinced it helps much in really muddy situations where momentum and wheel spin is required.

In many applications all the electronic add ons are pretty effective especially for the inexperienced but if your playing in difficult terrain then they can actually become a liability.

As i can turn mine off 100% ( factory disable ) - I have and don't miss them in the least.

When i first got mine i didn't realise i had to turn it off when in 4hi. Halfway up a long slippery hill i had to give up and hit the brakes and clutch only to discover a rockhard brake pedal and no brakes for a good 5 seconds. What followed was uncontrolled rolling backward down a steep hill. I now do the steering wheel dance when heading off road. Gives the same functionality as dropping into 4lo, offroad ABS and Brake Lock Diff still active.

I find the brake lock diff quite handy and less aggressive than many LSD's. Tested it out a few times at Land cruiser Park and it gets me up the hills others sit there bouncing on.

No probs. On the 2010 model (and from 2007 with an update through to I think 2011 or 12) you set the vehicle in 4hi handbrake on, neutral for a manual or park for an auto, and steering wheel straight ahead.

Turn ignition on (or start to make it easier) then turn steering wheel 1/2 turn right and press and hold ESP button for 7 seconds. Release and wait for chime then turn full turn to the left (so steering now half a turn to left) then press and hold ESP button for 7 seconds then release and wait for chime. Now turn steering wheel 1/2 turn right (so pointing straight ahead again) and press and hold ESP button for 7 seconds then release and wait for chime.

Turn ignition off then restart engine and the display should now indicate ESP Off.

Repeat the above to turn back on.

I believe they disabled this on 2013 onwards but dont have one so not 100% sure.
