With how some of the Caravan people overload their vehicles they should probably be considering a truck anyway.

RAM 1500 with the 3.0/8-speed for me thanks.
(+35 inch tyres and a big lift)

The govt is currently looking at 105g/km CO2 limits by 2025, which would bring us in line with the US. But in any case diesel is becoming too difficult to develop as emissions limits tighten. PHEV will eventually fill the gap and provide 3.5t towing.
Doubt if FCA will make a diesel model just for Australia..We tend to get the "Like it or lump it" being a small market..Like the US attitude has been to RHD.
Most of the dual-cabs are made in Thailand so they'll probably still have diesels. Probably push Jeep further down the sales chart....I've had Jeeps for 22 years both petrol and diesel and last 3 have been diesels and I'm sold on them which is a lot for me to say having been a petrol V8 nut since learning to drive..But the future looks certain to be PEV or maybe totally electric..Wonder how that will fit the long distance bush and outback touring here...Pull up and out with the solar charger I guess.

I've got a diesel Grand Cherokee and a V6 3.6 Wrangler, they are both roughly the same weight.

The 8 speed makes the difference in my opinion, the fuel economy isn't even that different for them.

Yeah if you want to tow half a house i'm sure it's a larger difference but that's what trucks are for, Australians are weird doing it with SUV/4x4 but to be fair with very few exceptions soon they won't really have a choice.

As much as diesels are fit for purpose with heavy duty hauling abilities, there is a glut of used CRD Grand Cherokee and Commanders in various online classifieds. You would struggle to find a 5.7L v8 GC or Commander for sale. The older the diesel gets, the more expensive it is to maintain and hold resale value.

As fuel efficient as the CRD is, it is a highly complex powertrain. Does it's fuel efficiency savings outweigh the resale value?

FCA will probably flog a V8 petrol of some description in 2022 that may be significantly more fuel efficient beyond tricks like cylinder deactivation.

Doubt if anyone tows 3.5t (aka half a house)..Some maybe crazy and try..That's the domain of 5th wheelers etc but 3.5t towing sure is a good sales pitch..The 4x4 (light duty 1t) utes were once tow rated around 2t but the manufacture's have since upped the same vehicles to 3t+.. Sales pitch to the fore...GCM vs GVM is the thing to watch..Towing 3.5t leaves enough room for 2x75kg adults and 7kg of luggage not accounting for the bullbar & winch + the long range tank and any other accessory (all subtracts).. Hmmm no allowance here for the overweight/obesity crisis..Me at 92kg + my wife (weigth never to be disclosed) guess the case of XXXX Gold has to stay at home..Just as well my offroad camper is 2.2t fully loaded.

Interesting to see what the GCM,GVM (Tare/KerbWeight+Payload) will be for any new PEV or EV 4x4 SUV will be especially EV with batteries.

Yep, when you really understand what has to be taken into account (i.e. included in) the 3.5t, regardless of what substance fuels the engine it's virtually impossible to safely haul a 3.5t caravan with a JGC or any other 3.5t rated SUV or Ute in the real world. It's a furphy, always has been.
