Funny thing is the auto guy where I am is very experienced with this snag1 (thanks Farwest) and he suggested he removed that thermo valve altogether as they fail a lot, however he may have an answer to that air lock problem

As you have a five speeder that has had the fuel relay recall read the thread on it, it will be near the the top as I am about to update it. Most installs of the external relay are dodgy causing issues

There is a priority valve in theses boxes from memory. If it's dealing with a fluid loss somewhere it'll deliver 100% to the trans and zero to the cooler circuit.

There is no reason that you can not physically remove the complete thermostat housing and join up the pipes with the appropriate fittings or suitable hydraulic hose and clamps .
No air locks would result .

That was my thought as well ....... only get an air lock if you remove all the guts of the valves so the bypass is the easy route..... most boxes have them fitted.
