I have to say, i can appreciate both point of view... and have wheeled, have owned a turbo diesel 4wdrive before..
Also you touched on reliablity of a turbo diesel? over a petrol... well i think thats starting to become a little more debatable when we are talking CRDs the factorys are making these days.. there is so much more computers, and problems, that a modern crd has, which the old ones (the motors that got the bullet proof rep) created never had
I really dont think a Modern CRD would survive a water crossing (UN-prepared) as you stated.. better than a petrol.. they hate it..
Plus you have double price servicing costs, double the services, more expensive parts..
As said above, for towing, crawling, engine life, they have some advantages, but for most people, situations, lenght of time people actually keep cars for these days.. petrol does just fine

I guess it depends on what your driving really. I think id have more fun in the sand and snow with a hemi upfront.. rockcrawling.. well i guess it comes down to as much your engine as it does transfer case and ratios.. (lets face it, the hemi, 5.38 ratios and atlas, it would be crawling at whatever pace you decide.
and after all that excitment, you can unlock it into 2wd, and drive home, V8 purring away upfront..

What about a 6.5 GM Diesel

You can pick them up for the best part of $8k

Sure it'd be a bit fo a tight fit

Fair coments.
I can only speak from my limited experience and I am yet to put my JK to the test but my 2006 GU patrol 3ltr auto turbo diesel did in fact sit running (bonnet under water) for about 6 or 7 mins before recovery with about 45cm of water through the interior after my lovely wife accicently cracked the door
So every computer was also submerged.

After the recovery I drove for an hour back to a mates house stopped for about an hour, then drove for 3 hours back to my home town of Bunbury in the south west on the sunday afternoon, then drove it to work Monday morning and off to the Nissan dealership on the Monday afternoon where I left it to be stripped down and have the interior replaced including every computer (something the insurance company insisted on)

The only trouble I had from electronics during this time was the "HOLD" switch (locks the auto into the selected gear) had got some water in it as the center console was under water and on the trip back to my mates house it was locked in 3rd gear.

After leaving the car sit for a while at his house it came good and had the full range of gears all the way back to Bunbury.

My point being is those computers in a petrol or diesel are a little bit better protected than we might think and the petrol still relies on spark.

So getting back to the school yard antics,
my diesels better than your petrol so

Can you tell I work with kids?

Its all about the delivery and how its put on the ground and to me the CRD turbo would be the preferred option. Now to say I have thought what the Toyota Twin Turbo V8 would be like in the JK...

Bring on the drool smiley, it's been over a year since I drove a 200 series with the 4.5ltr TT diesel setup but I can remember it was a beautiful thing! it certainly had no issue hauling 3+ tons worth of weight up to highway speeds

Cheers,
B.
