My CRD 06 auto was downchanging from overdrive incorrectly - on hills, would fall to 1500-1600 rpm, motor labouring then drop out of overdrive to third, briefly rise to around about 2500-2600 rpm then change back to fifith & labour again at 1500 rpm. Would cycle this until top of hill or manually turned overdrive off.
at 10,000km in October 06 service I complained about this & iniitially told nothing wrong. When querified further, Brighton Jeep said there was a tcm & ecu software upgrade.
Made a huge difference - upchange points in normal driving slightly higher, vehical feels generally more responsive to drive, and the with the down changing, at precisely 1600 rpm, drops gear, momentarily up to 2500 rpm, then settles back to about 1800-1850 rpm (fourth gear my guess) and stays there until 2000 rpm reached, then drops back into top.
Fuel economy also up about 10 per cent - were averaging 13.5 l/100km aroung town, now 12 to 12.5. 5000 km trip with 100kg camper trailer pre- 10K service was 14 l/100km. Just had 4000 km trip with trailer up to Qld over Xmas, av. 12.6 l/100km.
Do you think this is likely to be software upgrade occuring heretaht i ahd back in October?
I've checked on DC website & my vehicle not listed for recall but is that because they consider it done?

I've experienced this once or twice in the 12 months i've owned my CRD, then never again.
Yes to answer your question - its purely a software upgrade that has made the drivability and fuel economy of your KJ much better. ITs amazing what you can tune in or out with and (modern day) auto tranny.
Good to see your happy with your outcome.

My guess is whats happening here is it drops back to 4th, (2500 rpm) then the changes to 5th (1800-1850), then the torque converter locks up.
At least this is what mine seems to do. I had one of the Software flashes done last year, which seemed to improve the shifting. Haven't had the latest recall done nor do I intend to, why mess with something that works fine?

I have a 05 KJ CRD which started bizarre behaviour between Sydney and Goldburn on a return trip to Melbourne in March 06.
On acceleration, RPM increased however no noticeable increase in speed. Speed did increase, but ever so slowly.
Result - engine check light on and transmission o/heat light on at one stage.
Took dealership 3 months to finally diagnose with Chrysler tech guru's that itwas the torque converter.
At that time it was allegedly the 3rd one Australia and again allegedly was due to one of the two drive vanes in the torque converter slipping. ie fixing method to drive shaft no good or defective.
Solution = new torque converter and transmission pump.
Performance = seems to be the same as prior to the TC problem. nothing to complain of.
Extra: The EGR blew up causing the engine check light to come on = New EGR
Engine light on again recently = No1 glowplug and harness cactus = replaced same.
All seems good now and I have been engine check light free for 4 months - longest ever.
Ball joints replaced in recall last week - told by dealer it was a world wide thing, nothing wrong with originals - funny how that 'clanking knock' when going over speed humps has suddenly disappeared.
Otherwise all good.

Personally, I don't think this is just a CRD problem myself, a lot of what has been decribed here happens on my 04 petrol......I'm beginning to get rather concerned
