Found the problem one of the idler bearings collapsed and the timing belt jumped a few teeth
I might have bent a valve so in the process of pulling the rocker cover of to have a look
I guess it answers the question of whether you should change them when you change the timing belt 199,000kms I was going to change them in the next couple of weeks

Great that you found the problem.....but what a job it looks like to replace it.

Looks as if the idler pulley is plastic? if so the bearing might have siezed causing the pulley to collapse.
Also if the belt was overtensioned it would lead to premature bearing failure.
Generally idler bearings are getting noisey by 200k but still ok, plastic ones probably not as forgiving tho.

I'm sure I read in another thread that Jeep do not think it necessary to replace the idler pulleys when changing the timing belt. I wonder what their stance would be if you had the timing belt done at a dealer and this happened a few months down the track. Might be worth the extra money to insist on these being replaced as well at the time.

Its a 2002 2.5crd it has 199,000kms on the clock I was going to do the timing belt in the next couple of weeks.
The timing belt has been changed before but Im guessing the idlers and tensioner didn't get changed.
I pulled the head off today to check for bent valves all looks good but we damaged one of the injectors trying to get it out because the holes they sit in aren't sealed they were full of sand and im guessing water from time to time because they had corroded to the head.
The motor looks really good inside for the amount of kms on the clock.
now for the scary part and chasing up parts and prices

All I can say is bummer...if you get stuck with ridiculous parts prices, try the USA online stores like wholesalemopar.
Good luck.
