Not even 20 years ago, snorkels were only found on Diesel 4x4s in Oz.
I'm sure there are a couple of exceptions to the rule but they are exceptions - I never saw any petrol 4x4's with snorkels till fairly recently.

I believe clever marketing has created a need for snorkels on petrol vehicles in Australia - something which the Americans have not embraced as eagerly.
The lack of Diesel Wranglers in the USA could be a factor.

I'm surprised how many buy into the advertising hyperbole that somehow snorkels reduce dust ingestion into the air intake - when I'm offroading, the dust is pretty much EVERYWHERE - you would need a 50 metre snorkel to get clear air - here's a pic of me wheeling to illustrate my point. I have indicated where my headlights are
But I have bonnet vents and a chrome grill so what would I know?

Snorkel is also a true CA I. As in all under bonnet intakes are sucking in hot air from the engine bay, the snorkel puts the intake way above that in clean/cooler outside air. How much difference does this make? Probably bugger all but a lot of people carry on about CA I so thought it was worth a mention!

Very true with the dust, especially if in convoy, just look at how filthy everything on the roof rack gets

I had a snorkel sock in mine. Pop the top off and it just drops in. I used it as with the intake being up in the air it filled my air cleaner with bugs.. only takes a few seconds to remove and shake out every few weeks.

I put one on, a bit for water, (although it rarely sees any, let alone deep enough to worry about), but mostly for cold ait, as I had a lot of pinging, especially in hot weather. Intake temp on the gauges plugged into the OBD port said it was 15-30C over ambient temp in summer, so it was hitting 55C or more at times.

With the AEV (gen1) snorkel on, I now rarely see more than 10C over ambient, usually 5C over.

I also put a Donaldson Topspin prefilter on it & the air filter lasts for, well, years now. I pull it out & check it every so often, but I've only had to replace it maybe twice in the last 5 years. Even after dusty convoy trips when I was at the back, the filter was still pretty clean.

I was using the ram head on it & just putting the precleaner on for trips, then after driving home from work one day & noticing the JK seemed to be a bit noisier that usual. next morning when I went out I noticed the ram head was missing... Stolen or fell off? Don't know. So I put the precleaner back on & secured it semi-permanently, (not just the screw clamp), and never worried about it again.

I have to say having one is better than not from personal experience. At one of the Jeep Jamboree's I was running late in getting the Jeep ready, the flexy pipe running to my snorkel was damaged from the front wheel hitting it and I had not fixed it prior and then promptly forgot about it.

I'm sire there a few people on here that will remember me driving into a deep watery mud hole and taking a gulp of water into the airbox. I was fortunate enough to shut it down fast.

It took hours in camp to pull everything off, and mop up all the water out of the intake and cylinders, but she lived to fight another day.
