Default alloy wheel scratches
Hi guys,

Anyone suggest the best method to clean up scratches on an alloy wheel? I have a few mm deep scratch on one of the spokes (rear wheel) and want to smooth it up to make it look better and/or make sure it doesnt crack etc.
I was thinking of using a bit of fine wet and dry and smoothing around the edges a bit.

Few mm scratch could cause the rim to crack?? Surely not....But I must confess I prefer steel rims - every rig I've ever oned has been armed with steel...

W&D might help get the scratch out - but aren't the rims coated, hance you'd be scratching off that coating with W&D??

Default alloy wheel scratches
I have gouged the alloys on a couple of my wheels and although a few mm deep and quite rough I just cleaned them (to prevent infection ;) ) and love it just the way it is. I doubt such abrasions would crack my alloys - but they are quite thick - I have heard that they can crack/shatter more easily than steel.

Thanks guys for your tips. Looks like the clean it up a little and seal it with some silver paint is the way to go...

A scratch shouldn't make the wheel crack under any circumstance.

Don't use W&D or you will remove the coating. Get yourself s small tin of silver paint and a brush. Touch up the scratch and leave it at that. Best to clean it first with a tootbrush and a soapy water mix to remove any residues, then rinse and dry before painting.

If you don't seal the scratch, brake dust which is quite corrosive will start to lift the coating and in a short period of time your wheels will start to look very average.

Theres only one way to solve the scratch problem..go out again next weekend and get some more - that way it will be much harder to see the first one..

Get yourself a can of "rock" readily available in rural areas , a liberal wiping on your rim covers any scratch giving it a grinder type surface ... very cool the chicks love it
best of all once applied it NEVER rubs off :D
