Have a look on page 121 of the XH owners handbook..."Engine Oil Viscosity (3.0L Diesel Engine) SAE 10W-40 synthetic engine oil is recommended for all operating temperatures."
Sorry I mean WH not XH, silly mistake.

I only have the downloaded (so I guess US) 2007 owners handbook and it says 5W-30. What year is your XH handbook?

On the back of the book says 05.
The Grand has a build date of 07 05 , so its an early build.
As far as I know all the XH Grands in AU didnt have a DPF, but people I now with commanders (which have the same mechanicals) do have DPFs on their Jeeps(lucky buggers).
The only identifying stuff on the hand book is on the back cover as follows...DaimlerChrysler Corporation
81-426-5152 Printed in U.S.A. 05........
Yes same mistake again , WH grand not XH commander, but still the same except for DPF, which would make the oil recommendation different so as not to stuff up the DPF. Sorry again for that.

5oclock yeah the one I have from US has the 5W30 recommendation with DPF. The US only got the CRD engines from 2007 but they also got DPF with them in the GC's.

I know in Aus the early WH GC's didn't have DPF but thought they did have post 2008? Knew the Commanders did, poor buggas lol!

Yes its all a bit of a vexed question as which grade is the one to go for. I think a lot of factors come into it...Summer or winter, what part of AU you live and therefore what the temperatures Jeep is operating in, how many Kms the engine has done, is it towing a big load at speed for hours on end, synthetic , petrol or diesel.....since we were discussing the CRD the book says synthetic.
The SAE oil chart shows the limitations of some of the lighter grades at high temps...as for the lower temps -15 should be plenty low enough for winter.
A long time ago I had a Toyota petrol in an old FJ55 blow up right after an oil change and I always suspected it was my fault for using a light grade of oil. Anyway as they say once bitten twice shy.
The other problem with the WH is no oil pressure gauge, and I dont think there is even a sender so a OBD plug in type has no data to show! It would be a worth while mod to fit a sender, I wonder if CLARKY or anyone else has ever looked into the problem????

Well it's been 7000 kms on the CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 including a short stint towing the racecar to EC and back (approx 2.5t) and a round trip to Vic in Jan (not towing). The rest mostly Sydney driving and a few day trips up the coast to the beach.

The engine runs smooth and quiet. No issues but the big test will be towing to WP (if it ever reopens) or Bathurst up and down the hills.

Changed oil and filter today and went the same again. 100% confident I won't have any issues.

And SuperCrap has 5lts on sale again at the moment for $42 so going to grab another 10lts and put on the shelf for the next change.

Anyone wanting something a little thicker they also have a Castrol Edge 5W40 A3/B4 on sale for $60. Only 25% off vs 50% for the 5W30 but still cheap for IMO one of the best full synthetic oils.
