Default Hole in body under plastic near flares?

Hey guys, On the weekend I decided to take these plastic parts off the jeep since I wasn't a fan of them.

However, taking them off seems to have left me with a different issue.

As you can see, what's the deal with the hole and is there a common fix, or do I just grow to love it?

Thanks.

Wranglerforum.com & ausjeep & no answer yet? I reckon its a drain hole for the vallance in front of the windscreen maybe?
tip some water down the air intake under the windscreen & see if it comes out of the hole?

Not a drain hole - The holes on my '97 were covered in clear tape.
The drain for the cowl in front of the windscreen is right in the middle of the cowl - if you lift the bonnet and look behind the rear of the engine, there's a plastic piece which looks like a flattened funnel - that's the drain for the cowl.

I've read the holes on the fender panels are required on the assembly line.

Also, if you wish to remove the 3 rivets you have exposed on each side, they will need to be drilled out - don't be tempted to try to remove them with an Allen key - they will just spin making drilling them out harder to do.

Just buy at set of Rock Sliders to cover the hole on each side. Plus it will give you protection when off road and anside step for getting in and out of your rig.

I once took those stupid plastic things off too as couldn't see what useful purpose they served, then discovered that not only was there a big hole, but the spot welding was very noticeable and there is also the issue of the nutserts for bolting the plastic thing in place.

to me the only solution would be to remove the nutserts and fill with bog, polish the spotwelds smooth and then re-paint. what to with big hole? I dunno, maybe a rubber grommet
mine is covered over with a plastic film, presumable to stop mud and crap getting in there and rusting the panel

ended up putting it in the too hard basket and re-fitted the plastic thingos

My old Jeep had those plastic "flares", whereas the new one doesn't due to the rock crawler plates. What I have noticed is that the little plastic flare acts as a mud deflector as it stops mud getting flung up towards the windows.

If you don't want to fit rock sliders - how about just putting a sticker over the area
