Default tow bar luggage rack

saw this on ebay, looks like a pretty good idea, better than roof rack or trailer for small loads, just what I want for my cj, think I'll have to add it to my project list

You used to see a lot of that sort of thing hanging off bullbars at Fraser Island. You don't seem to see it anymore, because the set-up got a lot of bad press for upsetting the balance of the suspension. Also the leverage when the car bounces is huge and the stuff gets really thrown around badly.
I don't think they're a good idea at all on the move. A lighter tray when stopped only, is great.

They are illegal. Have had two local guys told to remove the "projection" immediatly.
One was a box to store ultralight flying gear, and the other was dog boxes. One guy was made to remove the "projection" on the roadside or face an on the spot canary sticker. (Poor pooches!)

how is it any worse than a bike rack?? as far legality goes.
as far as upsetting handling and suspension all I'd want to use it for is basic camping gear, prob no more than 50 or 60 kg, anyway after looking at the Jeep I think I'd rather incorporate a rack into the tyre carrier somehow so it wasn't sticking out so far

You can buy these in Queensland and the manufacturer claims they are legal here, but up here they can "legally" mount bike carriers to the front of city council buses!
Cheers, Junglejuice...
