Whats the hinge-plate type thing on the rear left?

If I had the factory cross bars to go with the rails I might have gone for something like that. Unfortunately I dont.

Will be replacing the rails with a fixed bar framework that goes full-width, and 170-180cm in length. I'm 173cm tall, and would like to be able to use it as a bed.
Got the design all in my head. postponing construction til next weekend though, so I can use a mate's trade account for materials.

Might try and CAD up the design in the meantime.

When I had my XJ I remember the manual stating that the load rating of the roof rack was for the ROOF, not the cross bars, they are just there to slide together to hold the load on the roof.
Thats if my memory is correct...it was 7 years ogo!

What happened to the attached images Gildo put in his thread? They're the best idea I've seen and they have to be heaps stronger than a gutter mount on an XJ.

Thumbs up

I am keen on this also, but have to keep it low (to get into the garage) I want to get the spare wheel out of the back and I hatwe wheel carriers plus I like the idea of extra lights on the roof.
